In Taiwan consumer protection law stipulates that consumers are entitled to a seven-day trial period after purchasing any products via Internet, including cell phone software applications. As a result of this law Apple and Google have had to modify their policies on mobile application sales.
While Apple has agreed to comply with the law and provide Taiwanese customers with a refund within the seven day window, Google has incurred $34,600 in fines over its refusal to offer a refund period. As a result Google has decided to remove its paid app marketplace in Taiwan until an alternative solution can be figured out.

On a personal note I hope that this new practice of allowing refunds on app purchases is brought to the United States. Not only will it help alleviate buyers remorse from the purchases of crummy apps but it will encourage customers to buy more apps knowing that they can download and use an app risk-free. Granted a seven day refund option may be a little too long I certainly wouldn’t object to a similar policy of 1-3 days. Currently Google offers customers a 15 minute trial period on all app purchases.
